The dry cleaner, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 Written by JohnnyBGood - View all my reviews - Top 50 Reviewer I enjoyed the drive in the daylight, but going back home in the late hours with empty pockets wasn't as pleasant. I went in January and the roads were frozen and slippery late at night. I'd have enjoyed the casino experience much more had I not lost as much as I did in such a brief period. I'd say the machines are much tighter than the original post would lead you to believe. Still, I had fun and would consider another trip. 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful
Black Oak Casino, Saturday, 05 January 2008 Written by careyje - View all my reviews - Top 50 Reviewer winding roads and somewhat challenging to leave at the end of the evening due to snow. This casino will absolutely stay on our radar for fair-weather places to re-visit. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and when the roads proved too slick to drive safely, we got a hotel room for the night and drove back the next day to have breakfast and continue gambilng until finally hitting the road around noon. Thanks to the very kind security staffer who recommended a local hotel (and a taxi with snow tires) to ensure that we were comfortable for the evening. Black Oak doesn't yet have a hotel / motel complex, but we hear it's coming and can't wait to visit it again. Had a blast, and I was up $500 in slot wins (on a $175 budget) when we finally left. My companion was up $300 (she wouldn't disclose her budget, but indicated that she didn't do as well on the tables). We very much appreciated the fact that favorite slots games were available in smaller denominations (quartes, dollars, five dollars) versus just the higher denominations like some money-hungry casinos. Double Diamonds and Triple Diamonds were consistent winners, and for nickle slots my companion recommends Texas Tea as a sure winner. Finally, we loved the ticket redemption machines. As prevalent as ATM's, we didn't have to wait in line to break down our winnings to smaller denominations and keep on playing. Black Oak Casino was great fun. Summary: How big is the parking lot? Smallish, but accessible. Do they have a good variety of slots & table games? Slots = yes, Table games = not so much. How long do you have to wait to cash in? Ticket Redemption machines were plentiful; we didn't notice a wait at all. What's the air quality? So-so. To keep the smoke clear, the A/C was on very high, so we were cold. I'd give it a 5 on a bad to average to great scale with 5 being average. Do they have a poker room? Not that we noticed. We played poker in the middle of the floor at the regular tables. How crowded is it on a Saturday night? We were there on a Thursday night during a holiday week. Have we seen any jackpots won there? We won (and reinvested) a lot. No huge winners that we noticed in the 2 times we were there. Do they have multi-denom slots? Not to much. Mostly, they had the same machines in different denominations vs. letting you choose your denomination at the particular slot in question. Do they have keno & video poker machines? Loved the poker machines; didn't notice any keno machines. How fast are they emptying the ashtrays? Very fast. Chairs were re-tucked, machines wiped down, the area was picked up constantly. Is it worthy of being my travel / vacation destination? Yes. We'll go again, once we sure that we won't be dealing with snow / colder weather. What kind of bank roll do I need? I usually budget between $200 and $400 per night when I'm out gambling; I won and lost about $5,000 on a $175 budget, leaving there with $500 after covering my surprise taxi, hotel and second day gambling expenses. Do they have a hotel or nearby lodging? Nearest lodging was about 10 miles away in Sonora. Do they have EZ ticket machines? If this is the ticket redemption machine for cashing out, then yes. Do they serve alcohol? Yes. How easy is it to drive there? It was a bit of a hassle, as the roads weren't well marked and we kept on getting re-routed to surface roads vs. staying on the local highway. Mapquest did a so-so job on directions; Yahoo maps did a much better job getting us there. And most importantly... DID WE WIN? You betcha ! |
